The Land of Life Where Various Creatures Breathe Alive, Mudflats

At the 44th World Heritage Committee, which will be held around July 2020, four sites - Seocheon in South Chungcheong Province, Gochang in North Jeolla Province, Shinan in South Jeolla Province and Boseong-Sooncheon - will be confirmed as "Getbol, Korean Tidal Flat." In the run-up to the confirmation of the registration status, we will learn about living creatures living in mudflats, stories of people living near mudflats, and travel to mudflats.

Experience Ramsar Registered Mudflats, Gochang Mudflats

Gochang mudflats were registered in Ramsar Wetland in 2010, with a registration area of 40.6 square kilometers. The Gomso Bay area, which forms a border with Buan County as well as Simwon-myeon, is a key area where there are various mudflats, sand mudflats, and mixed mudflats all the way to Gusipo Beach, which is close to Yeonggwang. Just like the case with most of the west coast, a beautiful sandy beach will also open up hidden mudflats when the tide sets.

As shown by the fact that the entire area of Gochang County has been listed as a UNESCO biosphere reserve, Gochang mudflats also have a high value of natural ecosystems. The rare habitat of tiger-striped Orithyia Sinica has recently attracted keen attention from experts as a group of international endangered species, Stork, flew into the mudflats.

There are not only benthos or birds in the mudflat ecosystem. Humans are naturally living together. Local residents use mudflats as a base for their lives and harvest clams (Bajrak) in spring and autumn, and cultivate laver in winter. Bajrak records the best production in the country, and there are even regulars who insist on Gochang dried laver by producing it in a traditional holding style.

Gochang mudflats are widely known because they have gained popularity among tourists. There are many fishing villages along the coast. The first place to make mudflats into the tour sites is Hajeon Village in Simwon-myeon. In the town of Hajeon, people gather attention by riding a light-powered cultivator named 'Mudflat Taxi' into the mudflats. Currently, the light-powered cultivators have been changed to tractors, and visitors can experience catching shellfish using hooks.

The nearby Mandol Village is running a variety of hands-on programs, including catching clams, working in the salt fields, and living in uninhabited islands. Around Mandol Village, you can experience the hard work of a person working in a salt field by pushing salt with a wheat stick. The fixed shore net is a small fishing operation for local residents. When the water is drained, various kinds of fish are caught in nets installed in the sea, which can be collected. At low tides, you can visit Oejuk island by the tractor to experience uninhabited island.

If you want to get out of the simple shell fishing experience and learn more about ecology, you can visit the Ramsar Gochang Mudflat Center in Duer Village. It was established by Gochang County and has a simple exhibition hall where visitors can watch the Gochang mudflats ecosystem and also runs a mudflats ecology education program through a reservation system. It is also interesting to take an electric car and take a look at the coast of the mudflat village, including a salivary botanical garden.

Angels' Blessing on Each of the 1004 islands, Sinan Mudflats

Sinan has many islands, developed beaches and mudflats, and is especially famous for its water industry. The island's unique unfavourable access is rather a quiet and clean island village, which attracts many tourists every year.

It is Jeungdo that cannot be left out of the mudflats trip to Sinan. It is Korea's first and one of Asia's first slow cities. The places many tourists visit in Jeungdo include the four-kilometer-long white sand beach, the largest single salt field in Korea, the Taepyong Yeomjeon (salt-field), the Salt Museum run by the Taepyong Yeomjeon, and the Sinan Mudflat Center, where visitors can see the mudflats.

Hwado Island, the place where the drama was filmed, is also a popular tourist attraction because of the beautiful scenery of Nodu-road. The open road that was exposed during the low tide falls back into the sea when the tide rises. Walking along the glistening road of the submerged sea water is also a different taste.

As the name of the mud-hopper bridge suggests, it is a little fun to look for and examine the mud-hopper in Jeungdo mudflats. The mud-hopper is characterized by slithering on the wet mudflats and is popular as a local food ingredient. Similar to the mud-hopper, there is a shuttles hoppfish that runs on the mudflat. The shuttles hoppfish is much smaller than a mud-hopper but runs faster. The mud-hopper and shuttle hoppfish, both can be observed in the Jeungdo.

A 10.8-kilometer “Angel bridge” linking Aphae-do in Aphae-eup to Amtae-do in Amtae-myeon was completed. Jaeun-do was a place where many people used to visit. Baekgil Beach, Dunjiang Beach, and Bungye Beach are the representative beaches of Jaeun Island.

Among them, Baekgil Beach has a clear sandy beach under a dense pine forest. There is a fine sand mudflat under the sandy beach, and it is good to walk barefoot as there is no foreign matter at all. The thrill of the moment when the watery sand mudflats meet bare feet makes you feel the healing of your mind and body.

Ecological Repository for Migratory Birds, Seocheon Mudflats

The moment Seocheon Mudflat was designated as a national wetland protection zone in 2008, it was registered as Ramsar Wetland the following year in recognition of being an internationally important wetland. Of the 63.3 square kilometers of mudflats, the Ramsar registration area is 15.3 square kilometers, encompassing Seomyeon, Bainmyeon and Jongcheon-myeon, including Yubu Island in Janghang-eup. In particular, Yubu Island, located 20 minutes by boat from Janghang Port, is a small but precious island that preserves migratory birds and endangered animals and plants.

Yubu Island, located at the point where the Geumgang River meets the West Sea, is the only manned road in Seocheon, a small island about a quarter of the size of Yeouido in Seoul. However, during the tide when all the sea water is drained, the vast mudflats, which cover more than 20 times the area of the island, appeared. There are about 20 endangered species designated by the IUCN(International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) and in particular, more than 4,000 oyster catchers, which are designated as Natural Monument No. 326, gather here for winter. The population has increased further because migratory birds that visited Saemangeum mudflats every year also moved to the residential areas of Yubu Island due to reclamation projects.

The Geumgang Estuary near Yubu Island is the largest migratory bird habitat in Korea and a place where you can see the estuary mudflats formed by the interaction of the sea and rivers. Walk for about five minutes past the Ha Goodbank, which was set up to prevent backflow of sea water, and you will reach the Bird Ecology Exhibition Hall. The exhibition hall also serves as a mudflat center, allowing visitors to look at information on migratory birds and mudflats here and participate in various programs such as bird-watching.

Some 9 kilometers from the exhibition hall is the Songlim Mudflat Experience Center. The site is also known as the location of KBS entertainment show "One Night, Two Days" where visitors can experience mudflats and enjoy sightseeing at the same time, as it is surrounded by famous places such as Janghang Songrim Forest Resort and Janghang Skywalk. The Songlim Mudflat Experience Center is operated flexibly according to water, just like any other fishing village experience village. There are a lot of short-necked clams and surf clams caught here. If you make a reservation by phone, you can rent baskets and hooks, and each person can carry a basket of short-necked clams and surf clams.

Living Place of Cockles and Hooded Cranes, Boseong-Sooncheon Mudflats

At the top of the Boseong-Sooncheon mudflats, the widest cluster of wetlands is developed. In the broad mudflats, colonies such as cockles and ghost crabs are developed as core species of bar-tailed godwits and Saunder's gulls. Cockles cultivated at high density in the mudflats of this area are continuously abundant in production, proving a healthy ecosystem.

Suncheon Bay, famous for its vast fields of reeds and mudflats, was the first coastal wetland in Korea to be registered in Ramsar Wetland in 2006. The area certified as a Ramsar Wetland covers 11 villages on three sides, covering 3,470 hectares, including Tosa-dong, Byeolyang-myeon and Haeryong-myeon, near the wetlands of Suncheon Bay and Dongcheon-gu.

In Suncheon Bay, 239 species of migratory birds, including the endangered species hooded crane, as well as 33 species of salivary plants such as red-foot crab, ellobium chinense and convex crab, are living on nature.

The representative salivary plants, reeds and east asian seepweed colonies, become a shelter for the zoobenthos living in the mudflats, and show different scenery from season to season. Walking along the four-kilometer trail created between the vast reed forests, you will find life breathing in mudflats such as mud-hoppers and mud crabs.

Every winter, thousands of water birds, including hooded cranes, common cranes, white-naped cranes, spoonbills, humpbacks, and fresh-water doves are nestled all over Suncheon Bay. During the spring and autumn seasons, numerous birds such as whimbrels, common greenshanks, terek sandpipers, Eastern curlews, sabrebills, and Kentish plovers make Suncheon Bay wetland a stopover between Siberia and Australia.

It is recommended to climb Yongsan Observatory, where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the area after walking through the four-kilometer trail created between the vast reed forests. A 20-minute climb up the stairs of the walkway will give you access to the observatory, and the curved S-shaped mudslide and sinking sunset over it will give you a spectacular view.
